Can smart film be installed on existing glass? A guide to SONTE retrofit
One of the most common questions we hear from clients and architects is: Do you have to dismantle walls to install SONTE film? When the words installation and mounting appear in a conversation, many people automatically assume that it involves interfering with the structure, removing glazing, and carrying out a costly renovation.
In practice, in the vast majority of cases, the answer is no.
SONTE is a retrofit technology, meaning it can be installed on existing glazing without dismantling glass partitions or replacing the glass. The film is applied directly to the finished glass surface, and the only intervention required is the planned connection to a power supply.
For the user, this means a smooth modernization of existing glazing, carried out in a clean and controlled way, with minimal impact on the day-to-day operation of an office, practice, or home.
What installation on existing glass looks like – step by step
A retrofit installation begins with preparing the space. It is enough to temporarily take the room where the installation team is working out of use, while the rest of the office or home can continue to function normally. The key requirement is that no dust-generating work is taking place in the installation area and that the space is clean.
SONTE film is installed adhesively, meaning no construction adhesives or aggressive chemicals are used. It is applied directly to the existing glass pane, and the entire process requires a high level of precision at every stage. Careful preparation and accurate application are what ultimately determine both the visual quality and the long-term performance of the film. The process itself is quiet and does not create typical construction mess.
After the film is applied, it is connected to a previously prepared 230V power supply. A two-core cable with a minimum cross-section of 2 × 0.35 mm² runs between the power supply unit and the film, while the power supply unit itself (approx. 25 × 15 × 5 cm) remains hidden in the designated location.
In typical projects of up to 10 m², installation takes one working day. Under standard conditions, one installation team installs around 15–20 m² per day. This makes it possible to modernize even larger spaces efficiently, without taking entire floors out of use.
In practice, this means SONTE installation can be carried out in an operating office, clinic, or hotel while maintaining order and minimizing disruption for other users of the space.

When does a retrofit require additional steps?
In most projects, installation on existing glass can be carried out without interfering with the structure. However, there are situations that require technical arrangements in advance.
Wooden frames
One example is wooden frames. In such systems, access to the edge of the glass can be limited, which is why the assistance of a carpenter is sometimes required. Each project of this type is analyzed individually to ensure that the solution is safe for the structure and as aesthetically refined as possible.
Applied muntins
Glazing with applied muntins also requires greater precision. These installations are more time-consuming and, due to the additional work and complexity, may involve higher costs. This does not mean they cannot be done, they simply require prior discussion with the client.
No power supply near the glazing
Another important factor is the lack of a power supply near the glazing. SONTE film requires a 230V connection to the power supply unit, so if the electrical installation has not been planned in advance, it may need to be arranged. In many cases this can be done discreetly, but it requires consultation beforehand.
There are also situations where partial removal of certain built-in elements is necessary to perform the installation correctly. If such a step is required, everything is discussed with the client before the work begins.
Importantly, as partners of some of the largest glass manufacturers, we ensure that any such actions do not void the warranty on the glazing.
Every retrofit installation is covered by a 40-month warranty, with the option to extend it to 60 months. The warranty coverage for the film is the same whether it is installed on new glazing or applied to existing glass. This means the modernization does not involve any reduction in the standard or security of the investment.
For this reason, before every project we encourage clients to take advantage of a free technical consultation. Project analysis and an initial quote are free of charge and help clearly define the possibilities and scope of the work.
What should be prepared before installing SONTE film?
To ensure a smooth installation on existing glass, it is worth checking in advance that:
-
230V power supply is available near the glazing,
-
2 × 0.35 mm² cable is prepared for connecting the film,
-
space for the power supply unit (approx. 25 × 15 × 5 cm) has been planned,
-
all dust-generating work has been completed,
-
the installation area is clean and provides sufficient working space for the installation team.
This level of preparation helps ensure the installation can be carried out efficiently and without unnecessary complications.
Frequently asked questions about retrofit installation (FAQ)
1. Do the glass panes really not need to be removed?
In the vast majority of projects, the film is installed directly on the existing glass without dismantling the structure.
2. Does the installation create noise or mess?
The process is quiet and clean. We do not use construction chemicals or carry out dust-generating work.
3. How long does the installation take?
For areas up to 10 m², installation usually takes one working day. Under standard conditions, one installation team installs around 15-20 m² per day.
4. Does a retrofit installation have the same warranty as new glazing?
Yes. The film is covered by a 40-month warranty, with the option to extend it to 60 months, regardless of whether it is installed on new or existing glazing.
